Art and Design

The Arts, Design and Technology

There is great emphasis on Art and DT in our school as we strongly believe it is an integral part of every child’s development. Art and DT motivates children to be creative and provides them with the benefits of self-esteem and cultural exposure.

These elements play a crucial role in the holistic development of our children so that they develop a positive attitude to both learning and life.

We follow the Kapow programme of study and aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

SEND in THE ARTS
Ambition- What are we aiming for children with SEND to achieve in this subject?

  • Children with SEND should have an enjoyment in learning more about Art
  • Children with SEND should feel empowered to explore their identity in a community with people who have different talents
  • Children with SEND should feel supported in expressing themselves through Art especially since many students with SEND seem to thrive in STEAM subjects
Access- What amendments are made to the subject in order to help children with SEND to achieve?

  • SEND children are supported with the aid of visuals as every lesson is supported by a video with instructions and the end result
  • SEND children are supported with examples of work from other artists
  • SEND children are supported with the necessary scaffolds as every lesson follows a small steps process to help them connect their skills and knowledge with their previous learning appropriately
  • SEND children have more space to thrive since most lessons provide them with opportunities to cover their multi-sensory needs
